The Power of Thought
Mark
5: 25-34 A woman who was sick
believed that if she touched Jesus’ robe she would be healed. And she did touch
it, and she was healed. And Jesus
said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. You are
cured of your disease.” In other
words it wasn’t Jesus that made her well, or God that made her well, but her belief
that if she touched his robe she would be healed.
Matthew
22: 36-40 One of the Pharisees ask him, “Teacher, which is the greatest
commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is
the great and first commandment. And a second is like it. “You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.” On these two
commandments depend all the law and the prophets.
Matthew
17: 20 Truly I say to you if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you
will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move: and
nothing will be impossible to you.
Matthew
7: 7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will
be opened to you.
Mark
11: 24-25 Therefore I tell you whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you
have received it and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive
if you have anything against anyone. (In other words your thoughts against
another will diminish your belief that you have received what you ask for in
prayer.)
In
all of these scriptures Jesus is saying, “It isn’t me that is doing the
healing. It is your belief when you say ‘I will be healed’ or ‘I will get well’
or ‘I will walk.’ You don’t have to be a Christian for this to work. You don’t
have to have any religious belief.
All
of these Bible stories are telling us that it is in the power of our own
thoughts, not God, that heals, that answers questions, that keeps us safe, that
guides us. This is Jesus’ main
message. This and the Golden Rule.
